Ben is a California native whose life has always revolved around sports, movement, and the outdoors. Growing up near Yosemite National Park, he developed a deep love for athleticism early on, playing soccer throughout high school, college, and even internationally in China and Korea. “Sweat every day.”
Ben is both a Certified Personal Trainer and an experienced soccer coach in the Richmond community. He coaches at St. Christopher’s and St. Catherine’s Schools, as well as travel teams for Richmond United (formerly the Richmond Kickers), where he has been a dedicated coach for more than five years.
As the Fitness Coordinator for nearly a decade, Ben has built strong relationships with staff and JCC members alike. His deep knowledge of the facility, equipment, and community needs makes him an invaluable resource in countless ways.
Drawing on his background in sports, functional movement, and body mechanics, Ben is committed to helping individuals build strength, balance, mobility, and confidence. His goal is simple: to help people move better and feel better in their everyday lives.

Lois Roethel began her venture into fitness much later in life. A Long Island native, prior to moving to Virginia, the extent of Lois’s exercise involved hustling from the train to her position as a full-time marketing executive on New York City’s Madison Avenue. Upon moving to Short Pump, Lois longed to begin an exercise regimen but not having the same foundational principals as her peers she found the gym to be intimidating and overwhelming. Yet, hidden away on a treadmill tucked into the back corner of her local fitness center, Lois began to walk her way towards her calling. Since that first angst ridden morning 10 years ago, Lois has clocked approximately 10,000 miles, running countless organized races ranging from 5Ks to half marathons.
As a “late bloomer” herself, Lois has developed a true rapport with senior JCC members. Leveraging her own intrinsic motivators to encourage others, she believes: Accountability comes from community … Strength begins when we lace up, and … Joy is sparked with movement!
