Florence Melton Adult Mini-School
The Florence Melton Adult Mini-School, a project
of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, enables Jewish learners from all backgrounds to learn about our heritage and culture in a challenging and inspiring course of study.

The Melton curriculum is intellectually stimulating and pluralistic. It introduces the shared heritage of the Jewish people and its development into contemporary forms of Judaism. This is an opportunity to explore classic Jewish sources and advance your knowledge of Jewish history. Melton is a two-year program and
classes are held weekly.

Back to Basics Hebrew
Instructor: Rob Gardner
Back to Basics: Beginning Hebrew will be a thorough examination of the Hebrew alphabet. Starting from Aleph (the first letter in the Hebrew alphabet). We will begin to tackle the traditional Hebrew liturgy, building a larger and fuller vocabulary and ultimate literacy! This class will be fun, engaging, and at everyone’s pace. No experience with Hebrew is necessary!

Women in the Torah

This course will not only expose the community to the lesser known contributions of women in the Torah, but also cultivate a better understanding and create a more in-depth knowledge of the contributions of women to the Biblical history of the Jewish people.

Women and Jewish Law
Instructor: Liz Alexander, PhD
Women and Jewish Law will focus on three basic areas of law: laws of family purity, laws relating to marriage/sexuality and laws relating to women’s ritual participation. The course will end with a survey of feminist approaches to the topic. Dr. Alexander is currently writing a book on the role of gender in Rabbinic Law and has numerous publications on the subject of Judaism, the role of Legal reasoning within Judaism and gender roles within Judaism.

Jewish Denominations: Addressing the Challenges of Modernity
Melton Scholars Course

The explosion of diversity in contemporary Judaism is reflected in this fascinating study of Jewish Denominations. Against the backdrop of dramatic political and social change of the past 300 years in the modern world, the particular forms of Jewish Identity and religious expression will be examined and explored. The course offers extensive insights into the historical and ideological development of the major movements as well as the impact of such issues as gender, assimilation, Israel and post-denominationalism on the movements and the Jewish people.

Paths to the Holocaust and Liberation

According to the Columbia Guide to the Holocaust, the Holocaust was the mass murder of 6 million Jews and more than 13 million others by the Nazis during World War II. Paths to the Holocaust and Liberation is an introductory class geared for people who want to learn about this watershed event but have not had the opportunity to do so.

Pirke Avot

Pirke Avot, Ethics of the Fathers is a book of ethics, honesty and advice. It transmits the favorite moral advice and insights of leading Rabbinic scholars of different generations. Each student will receive a copy of Pirke Avot with English translation included. This class is a continuation from Fall 2009 and new students are welcome

Joga: Jewish Yoga
Aleph - Bet Yoga

Instructor: Karen Romer
East meets Middle East in this combination of Hatha yoga and Hebrew. Learn both the Hebrew alphabet as well as basic yoga poses suggested by the otiot (Hebrew letters). We will explore both prayers and poetry as we physically form the Hebrew letters with yoga postures. No knowledge of Hebrew or yoga is necessary to take this class.
